After 18 years with the Paragary Restaurant Group, Chef Shannan Berg of Cafe Bernardo Midtown is leaving Sacramento. To celebrate her time with PRG and her involvement in the community, PRG is hosting a Farewell Yappy Hour event at Cafe Bernardo Midtown on Wednesday, July 31st with 10% of proceeds donated to the Sacramento SPCA.
Shannan Berg has been a valuable member of the Paragary Restaurant Group since she started working at Cafe Bernardo in 1995. We are proud to acknowledge all that Shannan has accomplished during her time with PRG. She helped establish the Cafe Bernardo brand and also assisted with the openings of many other Cafe Bernardo locations throughout the greater Sacramento area. She was a catalyst in making Cafe Bernardo Midtown the first BERC-certified Sustainable Business in Sacramento County, which eventually led to all PRG locations to becoming BERC-certified Sustainable Businesses. Shannan has also been involved in the Farm-to-Fork movement for years, by buying local, fresh and seasonal products for the café whenever possible.
Shannan credits her culinary success in Sacramento to her mentors, Teresa Urkofsky, Kurt Spataro, and Kathi Riley Smith. She also values her past experiences of working with both current and former PRG chefs, such as Patrick Mulvaney, Rob Vendetti, David LaRoche, and Adam Schultz. She cherishes the local chef community and will miss them, as well as her regular customers.
In addition to her accomplishments at Café Bernardo and with PRG, Shannan has held an important role in the Sacramento community for many years. She has been an active volunteer with local organizations such as the Sacramento SPCA, 4R Friends, Empty Bowls, Loave & Fishes, Met High School, and more. She most recently helped prepare Mother’s Day brunch for homeless women at Maryhouse and donated lunch to the volunteers that were rebuilding McKinley Park.
Shannan’s ever-present drive and determination to help our community’s animal shelters and rescue groups has made Café Bernardo a favorite spot for pet-owners in Sacramento. The dog-friendly patio always has water bowls and complimentary housemade organic biscuits available for dogs.
“We’re fortunate to have had such an ambitious, community-oriented person with our company for so long. Shannan has been an asset to both our company and to the community, so we are all very sad to see her go. We wish her the best of luck with her future endeavors,” said Randy Paragary.
Shannan’s last day at Cafe Bernardo Midtown is Friday, July 26th. She will be moving to Boston, MA in early August with her partner, Karen Weber. Shannan will miss her regular customers and loyal kitchen staff, but is hopeful to continue her culinary career amongst the bustling and diverse Boston food scene.
Kelly Her will replace Shannan as the new Chef at Café Bernardo Midtown. Kelly first joined Café Bernardo in 2010 as an intern from Le Cordon Bleu.
Join us in celebrating Shannan’s 18+ years with the Paragary Restaurant Group and her involvement with the SPCA at a dog-friendly Happy Hour on Wednesday, July 31st from 5pm-9pm at Café Bernardo Midtown (2726 Capitol Ave). There will be eats and drinks starting at $3 for the humans, as well as complimentary housemade organic biscuits and water for the dogs. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the Sacramento SPCA and the first 50 people that arrive will receive “doggy bags” with treats, coupons, and more!
